After 9 seasons of being TV's top show, the "American Idol" we got here to like through the years is sort of gone. The "Idol" that returns for its 10th season this week will appear and feel like a new competition.
The most doubtlessly damaging change is Simon Cowell's absence. The present faces its biggest challenge in shifting on without him.
"American Idol" has weathered changes earlier than, from the departures of judge Paula Abdul and co-host Brian Dunkleman (bear in mind him?) to the approaching and going of the present's "wild card."
But the absence of Cowell, along with everything else going on at "American Idol," really makes this a season of change.
And it comes not a moment too soon. Interest in "American Idol" continues to wane, from its decline in scores to the truth that the newest winner, the proficient but bland Lee DeWyze, is posting the bottom sales figures ever for an "Idol" champ.
